3 Ways To Add Flavor To Your Oatmeal


Winter in Chicago can often feel like Siberia and it can be hard to rush out of bed in the morning to get your day going. As a grandmother, I’ve found that making a new, fun and interesting dish for breakfast can really help make an otherwise dreary morning exciting! Lately, I’ve been experimenting with spicing up my oatmeal recipes, and thought I’d share some of my favorites with you!

The recipes below can be made using your own favorite method of preparing oatmeal, whether it’s using milk or water, rolled or steel cut oats. All you need to do add these delicious toppings after cooking and you’re ready to spice up your morning – how lucky is that?

  • Oatmeal with Nutella Probably the simplest way to take your oatmeal up a notch, just by adding about a tablespoon of warmed-up Nutella and sliced banana! See this recipe from Simply Scratch for some beautiful pictures.
  • Savory Oatmeal with Soy Sauce, Scallions and Egg This one is way out of left field, but when I saw this recipe from Mark Bittman; I had to try it! I hadn’t considered oatmeal to be a savory food, but in many parts of the world it is! All you have to do is add soy sauce, cut up scallions, and a poached or over-easy egg to your oatmeal. This preparation tastes so delicious and is so unlike any oatmeal you’ve had before, it’s a reason to get out of bed in the morning.
  • Oatmeal and PB&J Your grandkids will love this! Mix peanut butter and jelly into the oatmeal, and then add a small spoonful on top to finish. So simple and delicious, it brings you right back to childhood.
