50 and over is certainly beautiful as proven by Halle Barry, Julianne Moore and… you!
But, the skin care needs of those of us over 50, are also unique. Let's face it, we face new challenges after 50 with our skin, from a surge in dryness and sensitivity to crêpe paper texture and, of course, an increase in wrinkles, oh my!
From the onset of your 50s to your 70s and beyond your skin care concerns – – and needs – – will likely stay fairly consistent with hydrating, firming, and eradicating discoloration being many women's primary concerns.
Here are five anti-aging tips that will help you save face with grace.
One: Take a (chill) pill
Yes, having the right attitude about aging will help! It's a gift… certainly better than the alternative. However, there's an actual pill that can help as well and that is a probiotic.
"Probiotics have been shown to produce acidic molecules, like fatty acids, which can help restore the youthful pH of the skin, so it can better retain moisture for improved suppleness and glow,” says Robyn Gmyrek, a New York City dermatologist, via Allure Magazine.
Incorporating fermented foods will help as well taking a daily supplement that includes lactobacillus and bifidiobacterium.
Two: Eat and drink well
Take a Vitamin D supplement, eat lots of Omega-6 and Omega-3 Fatty acids found in olive oil, fish, etc. Drink lots of water! Get rid of processed foods and sugar. It is truly that simple, dear readers. We are what we eat.
Three: Retinoids... really!
Retinoids are derivatives of Vitamin A that boost collagen thereby reducing the appearance of fine lines. They also unclog pores, and speed up cell turnover which evens out discoloration.
There are moisturizing retinoids like Atralin, with hyaluronic acid, and Renova, which boasts an emollient base.
(If you missed my previous story about retinoids and why every single woman after 50 should use them, read it here.)
Four: Invest in a routine
Invest time, that is.
After 50, more than ever, it is essential that you carve some time out of your day to take care of your skin.
Mornings should begin with a sunscreen Application while evenings include removing make up gently and applying a retinoid then moisturizer.
I share more details about skin care myths and musts in my story here.
Five: See spot go
After 50, it is common to see more brown spots along the hairline on the chest and on the top of hands. It's time to add hydroquinone to your skin care routine.
Hydroquinone is a bleaching agent found in over-the-counter skin lightening creams and, according to the Mayo Clinic, over-the-counter hydroquinone products can be successful, depending on the darkness of the spot and how frequently the treatment is applied.
One to try is Rapid Age Spot and Pigment Lightening Serum - Murad, about $65 at Sephora.
