Denim Tips for Women Over 50

By: Honey Good

This summer and, before you know it, fall, denim, as usual, is the darling of style.  Yet, while we may have lived in denim in our twenties, as time marches on it sometimes becomes more challenging to find jeans we love.

That's why, this week, I've rounded up some of the newest and most wearable trends and looks in denim as well as must-read tips for wearing denim with panache, into our 50s and well beyond.

Tips for wearing denim after 50: Take the high road

Opt for high-rise jeans. You'll want to look for styles specifically marked as such. You'll be surprised, especially if it's been a while since you revamped your denim style, that so much of the denim on the market has gotten dangerously low cut.

Denim washes: What they are and why you care

Denim comes in a variety of different shades which are called washes. So many style experts agree: opt for a dark wash at our age because it's flattering and also can be dressed up or pared down.

Stretch = Wiggle

If you decide to opt for jeans with stretch, which most of today's styles will have, don't be afraid if you have to wiggle to get into them. This doesn't mean they're too tight. Let comfort and the fit be the guide as to how well the jeans are suited to your body but remember... a little wiggle is perfectly normal. If the zipper glides up easily, the jean fits.

Avoid the Junior Section

You will find jeans in this department are very low rise and very small. It is not uncommon for junior jeans to run smaller than women's jeans so unless you are minuscule, put on your big girl pants and shop in the  section made for adults.

Wear 'em and pair 'em

Once you find denim you love, here are some ideas for how to style your sophisticated denim look.

Finishing Touch: A Denim Manicure

Speaking of denim, what better way to embrace the denim trend than with a denim manicure? I'm loving haute denim hues in lacquer such as, from Essie,  "Midnight Cami"  -- a gorgeous blue that calls to mind my favorite pair of jeans.
