Expand Your Outdoor Space

By: Sue Pitchforth

Many of us love to spend more time outdoors enjoying the fresh air and sunshine.  Why not expand your space and create your own Outdoor Room? It’s easier than you think and best of all you don’t have to break the bank.

Your Outdoor Room is waiting for you to bring it to life.  It can be your balcony, front or back porch, deck or patio. Select a spot that you think would work well and let your creativity flow.

Many of the pieces you may have in your shed, garage or basement can work well in your new space. Go on a hunting mission and pull out tables, chairs, shelving and lanterns.  You probably have so many things that you forgot stored away waiting to be used in your new space!

Be sure to think about what features you would like to have in your Outdoor Room?

What is the purpose of your Outdoor Room? Dining, relaxing, conversation areas or a combination of both? Be sure to arrange your furniture to best capture the use of your new space.

Will you require a covering for your outdoor room? An existing roof line, a sunshade or pergola?

Need some privacy in your new space? A quick and inexpensive solution is to install bamboo blinds as curtains.  They can be raised and lowered when needed.

What types of seating do you require? Couches and/or chairs: For how many people?

What type of tables do you require? Dining, coffee table or end tables for conversation areas?

Decorators Tip: Everything does not have to match – bring in your own eclectic look and feel to your Outdoor Room.

Lighting – As the sun goes down, create a welcoming ambience for you and your guests.  Options include: candles, battery operated candles, lanterns of all sizes, solar lights or led mini lights.

Bring some floral touches to your Outdoor Room with container gardening.  It’s so easy to do, adds color and interest to your space. Here’s how!

Don’t forget those finishing touches. Accessories including artwork, pillows, outdoor rugs, vases and more can really add some punch to your space and make it yours. Here’s some inspiration!

Have I got you thinking about how you are going to create your own Outdoor Room? I hope so! Have fun, enjoy and best of all feel the satisfaction of creating your own fabulous space.
