How to ‘dress your age’ after 50

Women should dress their age.

Today, dear readers, I’m poking fun at some often-heard sayings that would attempt to dictate how we as smart, visible, stylish women should behave. What should dressing your age after 50 look like?

Should a woman dress her age? Absolutely! Some days I feel like a 30 year old, equal parts sexy and sassy. And other days,  I feel 40; confident and cheeky.  Fifty is fun and flirty. Sixty is sophisticated and sharp.

You get the picture.

How I dress represents how I feel on the inside. And that freedom, to express my true inner beauty, with all of its quirks and nuances, some days mature and staid, other days youthful and energetic, is my idea of “dressing your age.”

Personal style after 50

My style represents me. It is mine and mine alone. The uniqueness of my fashion choices is part of what makes me visible and vibrant, at any age. I’m not ashamed to admit that I love style. It underscores my substance, it does not belie it.

With that said, here are a few of my favorite outfits. I hope they inspire you to embrace the idea of dressing your age after 50, in whatever way you wish to do so.

The purple “sweats” and yellow Prada sneakers above embody my love for unusual and, dare I say, optimistic color combos. You may recall, I bought these sneakers to brighten my recovery after I broke my ankle.

There are so many details that I adore in the above outfit. I love the belt because I live on the sunny side of the street. The shirt is from Perfectly Covered, a collection I love. And, of course, I paired this ensemble with the ultimate accessory, Orchid, who invariably and unabashedly steals the show.

I’ve read stories about how women of a certain age shouldn’t wear jeans. Why on earth not? This is one of my favorite ensembles and again, I love combining colors in unexpected ways. I adore this look as you can see, the smile on my face is genuine! The jeans are from Talbots.

Gertrude Stein said, “We are always the same age inside.” I agree. And that’s the age I’m dressing for… are you? What do you think about dressing your age after 50, dear readers?
