Retinol: The skin saving ingredient every woman needs

Honey Good recommends a skincare routine should include retinol for women over 50

Did you know, dear readers, that there truly is one ingredient that every woman should have in her skin care routine? Skincare regimes should include retinol for women over 50.

Retinoids are derivatives of Vitamin A that boost collagen thereby reducing the appearance of fine lines. They also unclog pores, and speed up cell turnover which evens out discoloration.

The first retinoid, called Retin-A, was approved by the FDA decades ago as a treatment for acne.

Fast forward to today: We can choose from three prescription-strength retinoids: tretinoin, tazarotene and adapalene. But, you don’t have to go to a dermatologist to take advantage of this one must-have skin care ingredient. There is an over the counter retinoid — called retinol — available in a bevy of beauty products.

Here’s what you must know before you make a dermatologist appointment, head to your favorite beauty retailer, or shop from my list of retinol products, below.

Your skin may get worse before it improves… and that can be hard, to say the least!

Retinoids do cause dryness and flaking in the beginning, but the end result, smoother, clearer, younger looking skin, may be worth it.

To ease into a retinoid routine, try applying the product every other night, as your skin acclimates. And, please, do be sure to apply a moisturizer after your retinoid of choice.

According to Oprah.com, retinoids will NOT make your your skin sun-sensitive.

“This is one of the biggest retinoid myths,” says Doris Day, MD, clinical assistant professor of dermatology at New York University Medical Center via Oprah.com. “The ingredient itself is sensitive to sunlight, which is why you should apply it before bed at night.”

Yes, you can afford it!

True, there are top notch products such as 111SKIN’s highly concentrated night treatment, which contains the maximum strength 1% pure retinol, that will set you back a pretty penny… $230 to be exact. (See where to buy below).

But wait! There are also great products, like the one I am holding in the photo above, that price out at a very affordable $11 or so a bottle. So, what are you waiting for? It’s never too late to start a new, skin-healthy habit.

Five Retinol Products to Try:

  2. DR. DENESE FIRMATONE RETINOL EYE SERUM AUTO-DELIVERY, $39.94 from QVC.

So , do they all work the same? $11.00 to $230.00 is quite a difference. Is it worth paying the higher price ? Does it do the same but take longer to work?
    Thank you.

I really am not qualified to answer. I would look and see the strength of the retinol in each product. They say the maximum is 1%. I hope this helps you. Warmly, Honey
