4 TIPS TO KEEP YOUR HAIR HEALTHY AFTER 50

It is possible to get healthy hair over 50, if you follow a few simple tips. First of all, are you taking proper care of your hair for your age? Hair seems to be the one thing that we don’t consider much when we think about how we will change when we are over 50. But the fact is, we will see many changes in our hair beyond the color!

Here’s How to Get Healthy Hair Over 50

Hair tip #1: Properly nourish your hair.

Aging can cause hair to be drier, split more easily, and start to thin.

To combat this, use proper products and use them appropriately. Unless your hair is particularly oily, only shampoo every second or third day, and use sulfate-free shampoo to avoid stripping your hair of natural oils. Use a hydrating conditioner every time you shampoo, and supplement with a good quality hair oil or serum in between.

Toss your mousse and aerosol hairspray, as well.  These products tend to contain too much alcohol, compounding dryness and giving a matte finish instead of shine. Instead, use a volumizing spray, a drop of hair serum, and a dab of pomade for shine and hold.

Hair tip #2: Feed your hair from the inside.

Be sure to eat a diet rich in biotin, niacin, and omega-3 fatty acids. These are essential for healthy hair, skin, and nail development and will aid healthy growth and shine.

Hair tip #3: Get a professional haircut and/or color.

Our next tip for healthy hair after 50 is to pamper yourself. Now that your hair is healthy, you can avoid the myth that women over a certain age must cut their hair above the shoulder. To the contrary, the proper cut and color can highlight your best attributes and camouflage your worst.

For example, long side-swept bangs can highlight your eyes and hide wrinkles on your forehead. They also can draw attention upwards and away from the neck and chest. And, if you want to go long, go for it! It can help veil a double chin or that dreaded turkey neck, and it gives a more youthful look. Be sure to include texture and layers for movement, and keep it trimmed regularly to avoid frizzy split ends.

As far as color goes, follow your heart. You can embrace your gray, cover it with blond if you prefer or add shimmery copper highlights to a brunette palette. The key is to keep whatever shade you choose light and bright to avoid a harsh contrast between your hair and skin tone.

Avoid black tones unless you have olive skin, and go with a softer blond or silver rather than harsh white to avoid looking your age and then some. Have your hairdresser add dimension every second or third visit by adding lowlights, highlights, or both. This will help your hair capture light and reflect movement, looking healthier and shinier.

Hair tip #4: Finally, take care of yourself — mind, body, and soul.

Stress can have a dramatic impact on aging. This can include premature graying and hair loss if one is genetically predisposed. Pamper yourself with a nourishing diet, regular exercise, and healthy self-care habits to minimize stress, enhance relaxation, and build sound sleep patterns. Be good to yourself, and your outward appearance will reflect it with a healthy glow from head to toe.

    The texture of hair changes as we age. It can, as in my case, change from pretty to pouf-y. Not in a good way, either. In order to combat the dryness, I use oils prior to and after I shampoo. Most of the time my before-shampoo is simply olive oil. And my after-shampoo oils tend to be Moroccan Oil ( Blue Mercury) or Mineral Fusion Smoothing Hair Oil Mist ( Whole Foods).

    In the last year I have lost about 50% of my hair plus it breaks off…I’ve always had baby fine hair but I’ve been going thru menopause for the past 3 years and had gastric bypass surgery 12 years ago..i take a high dose of biotin and an array of vitamins and just started multivitamin patches..i workout every day and drink high protein shakes..nothing works..I keep my hair up because it’s so uneven and scraggly and chopping off what little I have is not an option..my hair has been reduced to a tiny spout on my head like jeff Dunham’s peanut! Anyone in the same boat or have suggestions?

      I have a friend who suffered hair loss and had injections. Her hair looks very nice. You can inquire about injections.Your other option is to buy a few good wigs and not worry. Wigs are beautiful today. Hope I have helped in a small way. Warmly, Honey
