5 Steps to Reinventing Your Makeup Routine in 2020

Reinventing Yourself in The New Year

This past New Year’s Eve my 26-year-old daughter (who is, in truth, a wise “old soul”) said something that truly hit home with me. Though she felt resolutions weren’t productive for her and most people, she maintained that the concept of a “new year” really did provide a helpful tool for closure and a sense of new energy for the coming year.

Reinventing ourselves in big or small ways can be gradual or instant.

It means having the courage to test drive a new comfort zone to see if it fits us. What if we stop waiting for the future to find us and take action? What if we take the power and energy inherent in this new beginning and hit the “reset” button so this can be a time of revamping and fresh beginnings?

Make a Change In Your Makeup Routine

If you’re ready for a change in your makeup routine, want to feel revitalized and more vibrant or are just looking for a fresh start or to feel more polished, sometimes just a few tweaks can make all the difference. And looking on the outside how we feel on the inside can truly help us feel more confident. After all, we all know that having a good hair day or wearing something we always get complimented on can definitely give us a boost. Likewise, making a few tweaks in our makeup routine can definitely be energizing. After all–there is no expiration date on beauty!

Be sure to watch my video and makeup demonstration on this topic above and check out other videos on my new YouTube Channel “Boomer and Beyond Beauty with Elise” which specifically focuses on makeup tips, techniques, and product information for those of us 50+.

Here are five steps you can take now to reinvent your makeup routine so you can see a smile in your eyes when you look in the mirror!

Step #1: Identify Your Best Feature

The first step in creating your quick and easy personalized Makeup Routine is to determine your best facial feature. Is it your eyes, lips, skin, cheekbones or other?
Write what your best feature is here:____________________________
This is the feature you’ll want to spend the most time to create your new 2020 makeup routine.

Step #2: Identify Your Most Challenging Feature

Next, decide what is your most challenging feature. What feature do you want to address, but which you don’t want to spend a lot of time on? Uneven skin tone? Eyes? Lips? Eyebrows? Other?

Step #3: Consider the Research Results About the Importance of Facial Contrast and Evening Out Your Skin Tone

Recent research determined that women with increased facial contrast are perceived as more attractive. By evening out our skin tone and adding more color to our features, we can alter how much our facial features stand out and definitely improve our appearance and confidence so we look on the outside how we feel on the inside.

So in this second step, consider the research results about the importance of creating facial contrast and evening out your skin tone and decide which results you want to spend the most time addressing.

Where do you have the least facial contrast? Between your skin and your eyebrows? Between your skin and your lips? Other? Is evening out your skin tone most important to you?

Write the area of your face where you have the least facial contrast—OR is it more important to even out your skin tone? Write your answer here:

Step #4: Pull Together the Information from Steps #1, #2 and #3

Now it’s time to pull together all of your results from the previous two steps:
A. My best feature is:______________________________________________
(Where I’ll spend the most time )

B. My most challenging feature is:___________________________________
(Which I’ll want to address but where I don’t want to spend a great deal of time)

C. The area of my face where I have the least facial contrast is—or is it most important for me to even out my skin tone? __________________________________________________________
(Where I’ll spend more time)

Step #5: Decide What Specific Makeup Products and Techniques You’ll Use

Next decide what specific makeup products and techniques you’ll use to address A, B, and C above. For instance, if your eyes are your best feature, which of these products will you incorporate into your routine? Eye primer? Eye shadow? Eyeliner along the top of the eye? Eyeliner along the outer bottom 1/3 of the eye? Eyelash Curler? Mascara on top lashes? Mascara on bottom lashes? Some of the techniques might be: “apply eye primer all over the eyelid area up to the brows,” or “apply a light-colored eyeshadow to the eyelid,” or “create an outer V in the form of a backward 7.”

You should now have an outline of a personalized makeup routine that will best suit your individual needs. And if you need some help, ideas or guidance with any of these steps in your routine, you’ll find tips, techniques, and product information specifically for those of us 50 plus on my new YouTube Channel.
