You have a relationship with everything in your wardrobe…
I hope you all had a pleasant Thanksgiving. My Ultimate Concierge and I had my mom and one set of friends for dinner. We live in the same building and we had a lovely time.
Living in Elsewhere has given me time to get in touch with the me in me. Every woman should have this attitude!
Top on the list is to reward yourself. And, there are countless ways.
Organizing Your Home Also Organizes Your Mind
Organizing our apartment in the sky became my priority when I was forced to meld two homes into one. The sale of Shangrila, our home in California was the reason. After six weeks I unpacked 83 boxes and found a home for each item. The project rewarded me ten-fold because I did not stop there. Every cabinet and file drawer in our home was reorganized. I know where everything is; a great personal reward. Organizing our apartment in the sky felt as good as soaking in a bubble bath!
Talking to My Clothes in My Closet
I do have one more very personal project: My closet. This is where we house our outer style. I took a hard look at my clothes and said, “I have a personal relationship with each of you! How can I let any of you go? You have lived with me, traveled with me, and impacted my mood and behavior.”
Now, I am going to send some of them packing. How? I am going to try on each piece and ask myself: How often do I wear you? Have I outgrown you? Am I keeping you for sentimental reasons? Are you out of style though special enough to keep because you are one of a kind and I may never be able to replace you? Do I feel ‘blah’ when you are on my body?
On a positive note: Do I feel confident about the me in me when you are on my body? Do you have the flair that makes me feel confident and powerful and beautiful? Or do you flatter my body? Do I love, love, love, you? Or do I just love you?
Every Woman Has a Significant Style
I have a significant style. You do too! And, you do not want to lose your authenticity. So, I suggest you hone in on your options. That is what I am going to do. I want my wardrobe to be eclectic but stick to my authentic style. And, I want my wardrobe to fit all of my whims; sporty, stunning, fun, a wow, sophisticated, unexpected… I am sure you do also. I want to be in love, darling!
Life in Elsewhere
This seems to be the perfect storm to force ourselves into our closet because Elsewhere has deprived us of the option of going out to many places. I can’t speak for you, but I have lost my desire to go through my closet looking for the perfect outfit for the day because where am I going!?! And, I find it depressing to no longer dress-up, add accessories, and put on eye makeup.
I boost my mood each day with a spritz of my favorite perfume and my red lipstick; I put my hair in pigtails with non-matching colorful rubber bands and I wear colorful socks that make me smile and that is about it. Darling, I am forgetting how to dress! I don’t know who I am anymore!
I Say Out Loud, “Try, Try, Try!”
Therefore, I am going to try very hard to put myself on a high by organizing my wardrobe! Here is how I am going to do this. I am going to take my time. And, I am not going to do this in a day or a week. I have shoes, handbags, my hanging clothes, my sweaters, etc. Rome was not built in a day, but when it was built it shined. That is my goal, to feel the shine in myself and reacquaint myself with my wardrobe and my feminine side; my love of style. I want to open the doors of my closet and see it organized and shining.
Next, I will ask myself, what should I keep or kiss goodbye? My mantra is, “Everything in my closet must have value because it is either functional, stunning, or I am in love with it.” I will use this information I have collected about myself as my guide and rid myself of clothing that no longer is me. This will create a joyful release.
In our apartment in the sky, I have an old fashion closet, therefore at the end of summer, I do a switch. Summer clothes are moved out into another closet in another room and replaced with winter clothes. This task has been completed.
Sharing is Caring; My Thoughts
A month ago I ordered beautiful white satin hangers and shoe racks. So, I am ready to start organizing my winter wardrobe.
First, make stacks. I am going to make separate stacks of clothes. My jeans, my dresses, my slacks, my blouses, my jackets, etc. I will not do this in one day but rather one or two stacks a day. I will try everything on as well. And, I certainly have time on my hands with living in Elsewhere and COVID-19! I will ask myself, “Is this a keeper? I love this but there is something a little off… boring!”
Second, I look at my ‘love stacks’. Do I really love everything in the love stack? Is it versatile, current? Would I miss it if the dry cleaner ruined it and try and replace it? Do I love it but it’s too long? Is it a little tight? In other words, would I love it if I could alter it? Or is it simply missing something?
Haven’t Worn in a Year
Fourth, sell your good items. I will sell my high-quality shoes, handbags, and clothing that is just like new. Darling, I have done this with shoes because of my bunions and did very well. Every pair of shoes was in excellent condition.
Lastly, bag everything immediately and put it in the trunk of your car or your garage. Taking it out of your home will help the process be complete.
Make Space: Clear Your Heart and Mind
The last time I did this was quite a few years ago after my girlfriend told me to get rid of everything I had not worn in a year; even if it had a price tag on it. I did. And, I was ruthless. I tossed and bagged and sighed with relief.
I could see everything I really loved hanging in my closet. There was space between my clothes. And, room to add more! Isn’t that part of womanhood. To gather, gather, and then continue gathering!

It hit home for me, tooooo. Warmly, Honey
Hi Honey!! Yes I enjoyed your article immensely. It has started the wheels turning and hopefully I will begin this week to discard. I try to do this pretty often but my closet has gotten to be a disaster lately. The one thing you mentioned that I have not done is the trying on of each item. I think this will help greatly. Thanks for this article and your blog on all subjects. Take care and happy organizing!!
Thank you for sending ‘happy organizing.’ I need all the positive reinforcement I can get. I am glad I could help you. Warmly, Honey
