Earth Day 2022 is just around the corner (Friday, April 22!). An auspicious date, don’t you think? If you haven’t had a chance to sign up to volunteer or have yet to make a plan, we’ve got you covered.
I didn’t want to bombard you with a thousand options. When you have more options, you’re less likely to take action. So instead, I made a list of 5, simple things. These are things you can do today, tomorrow, or any day to make Earth Day every day!
#1 THING YOU CAN DO ON EARTH DAY – TAKE ACTION!
There are thousands of activities planned around the world for Earth Day. From local cleanups to more ambitious projects such as planting a forest, there are lots of ways to get involved. But do yourself and our earth a favor, don’t just post about it on social media — do something!
Go to your town’s home page (just google the name of your town) and see what they have planned.
Or visit Earth Day’s official site and find actionable steps and local activities there!
#2 ENJOY NATURE
If you’re looking for a way to get pumped up about contributing your time and resources to beautifying our earth, look no further than your backyard. Or the park down the street. You get the idea, just get out there.
The fact is, we are blessed to live in a beautiful world. You do not have to travel to a beach or the mountains to revel in this beauty. It is all around us. Every leaf on every tree, every blade of grass. Simply taking a walk down your street can be a peaceful walk in nature if you make it a point to stop and smell the roses. Or look at the blue sky.
It’s a great idea to look up trails near you, maybe you’ll find a gem of a path that you haven’t explored before. You may have a previously undiscovered oasis minutes away! Get out and explore. Appreciate nature. Not only does this benefit the earth, by making you more likely to care, but it also boosts your mental health!
Here’s a helpful site that will find a park near you! Enjoy Earth Day in nature.
#3 GO THROUGH YOUR THINGS
Have you been putting off cleaning out your closet? Earth Day is the perfect excuse to give you a push! If it feels overwhelming, try setting a timer for 25 minutes and see how much you can get done. It makes it like a game. It’s fun, trust me.
Read here how I cleaned out my closet and it increased my happiness 10 fold!
Earth Day Benefits of Cleaning Out Your Closet:
- You can donate items for reuse (Here’s a good article on what/where to donate.)
- You’ll find items you forgot you had! (No need to buy them again.)
- Not to mention, you’re bound to find new life for old objects!
#4 MEAT-FREE MONDAYS (OR MORE!)
It’s well documented that meat, ie livestock raised for consumption, uses many more resources than plants do. Not only do animals need to eat and drink (a LOT of water), but they are a huge contributor to greenhouse gases. Not exactly Earth Day friendly.
The great news is that you don’t have to go full-on vegan or vegetarian, simply reducing your meat consumption will have an impact. Especially if everyone does it. One day a week is totally doable!
Here are some seriously tasty vegetarian recipe ideas:
- Vegan Pot Pie with Spring Vegetables
- Grilled Vegetable Burrata Sandwich with Lemon Thyme Honey Mustard
- Sweet Potato Black Bean Enchiladas
- Mushroom Bourguignon
Can’t forget dessert! (Most desserts are naturally vegetarian.)
Another helpful tip: Consider planning or even prepping your meals. This way, you’re less likely to have waste.
#5 DITCH PLASTIC – CARRY YOUR OWN WATER BOTTLE
You might be thinking everybody knows that. Sure, but do you do it? Everyone knows how important it is to hydrate. But this doesn’t mean that you should keep a flat of water bottles in your garage for easy access. It’s so easy to carry a reusable bottle instead.
I carry a water bottle with me everywhere I go. To me, it’s much better than a crinkly plastic water bottle. The reason why is that it stays cold! And I like to add a squeeze of lemon or even cucumber slices and mint leaves. Make it an exciting experience.
I love the brand Ocean Bottle. First of all, they’re lovely and work well. But more importantly, the company actually takes action to keep plastic out of our oceans. At this point, they’ve removed 1.2 million kilograms of plastic! And they’re made from reused stainless steel and upcycled ocean-bound plastic! I urge you to check them out if you’re in the market for an eco-friendly water bottle.
Don’t forget to carry your own reusable grocery bags as well. I actually prefer them because they’re easier to carry!
Above all, this Earth Day I hope that you will take action on one of these easy tips. Even better, all of them. Better still? Turn every day into Earth Day and implement these ideas day in and day out.
