Detoxing After the Holidays

Are you feeling particularly sluggish now that the holidays have officially wrapped up? There is no better day than January 2 to kick off a healthy habit!

Today, I’m sharing one of my favorite ways to detox at the start of a new year that is easy to incorporate into your daily routine and will ensure a beneficial start to your 2019.

The Benefits of Taking a Probiotic

Did you know that 80% of the immune system is in the gut?

Research has proven that poor digestive health can lead to a host of issues from inflammation, fatigue and low metabolism to poor immunity.

Today, scientists are learning that the gut-brain link is stronger than originally thought, and that poor digestive balance can even lead to depression and anxiety. When we say we feel something in our “gut,” we may quite literally do just that!

After 50, many experts agree that daily use of a probiotic is essential to maintaining health. Do you take one?

Even if you aren’t currently taking a probiotic, you can try this option for just $36, here.

Gut Health After 50

Gut health after 50 starts with spores. In case you didn’t know, here is why spores are so important to good health…

Spores are nature’s true probiotics. They can survive the harrowing journey to the gut, the site of all the action.

According to a microbiologist, Kiran Krishnan, one of the most important factors keeping our body in a state of homeostasis, and thus good health, is our gut.

“The biggest difference across all ages, cultures, and populations is the diversity of the gut microbiome,” says Krishnan.  “Studies have confirmed that a diverse microbiome is a far healthier microbiome.”

Probiotics are great for ensuring a gut that is teaming with diverse microbial life. But, according to Krishnan, there are also a lot of misconceptions about probiotics.

Popular Probiotic Myths

Refrigerated probiotics are best.

Not so, says Krishnan!

“I hear this all the time but it is completely false. If the strains cannot survive at room temp on the shelf and thus have to be refrigerated to maintain viability, how will they survive 98 degrees and a pH of 1 (very acid) in the body? The companies that support refrigeration have never been able to answer that question effectively.”

Just eat yogurt and you’ll be fine.

It is true that fermented products like yogurts, kombucha, and kefir are good sources of probiotics. However, Krishnan explains that they are not the rich source of probiotic bacteria that many believe.

“The microbes used to make those products are designed to ferment dairy proteins and sugars in a factory environment. They are not designed to survive the stomach and colonize in the gut. If you are drinking kombucha daily, you will still need a true and effective probiotic to help defend your gut.”

The World Health Organization (WHO) found that women over 50 require a very unique set of micronutrients that are not met by conventional multivitamins. That’s why incorporating this healthy habit into your daily routine now is so important! Will you make the smart choice, darlings?

    Happy New Year Honey!
Yes, I need to detox after all the holiday goodies. Is there anyone out there that has a difficult time stopping the sugar and carb cravings. Each day I start out great but the end of the day ends in a crash. It is all coming from the gut brain, it’s true. Help! How do you stop it?
I’m sorry I don’t have a great solution to offer everyone. Maybe just getting it out in the open will help.
    Thank you for any suggestions.

    Gratefully,
    Susan
