When it comes to dressing stylishly over 50, Billy Baldwin may have said it best: “Be faithful to your own taste because nothing you really like is ever out of style.”
Dressing Stylishly Over 50
I think this quote speaks to us as women over 50. In this season of our lives, it’s not always about keeping up with the latest trends, but rather, knowing ourselves and what we like and feel confident in.
Besides, we can actually set the trends! This is an incredibly exciting and liberating time in history for women over 50, so indulge yourself in a wardrobe update… you deserve it!
Not to mention, dressing to flatter your body and expressing your personal style can give you back a level of confidence you haven’t felt in years. So, go ahead and open your mind to the possibilities!
Today, I’m sharing 5 essential tips for embracing your signature style as a bold, vibrant and visible woman over 50.
What Was Old Is New Again
Do you ever see a millennial walking down the street in a piece you successfully pulled off years ago? As it turns out, some of your retro favorites are back!
Think culotte pants, midi skirts and casual blazers you may already have in your closet. It’s time for these pieces to have their second chance, so mix and match them with newer items you’ve bought more recently for a look that is as classic as you are!
Update Your Layers
When they say to stick to the basics, they aren’t kidding! Having solid layering options is a style-must at any age. But over 50, don’t fall victim to choosing pieces that are frumpy looking or hide your entire figure.
Instead, opt to try fun pieces like cropped jackets or wrap coats. These make an outfit functional and beautiful.
Find Fabulous Footwear
The quickest way to update your wardrobe is from the bottom up! Freshen your look with new “kicks,” as your grands might say. It’s all about wearability, so keep that in mind, with options like block heels and pointed toe flats leading the way.
Another foot-friendly choice that looks and feels great at every age is the short bootie. The best part is that these shoes don’t have to cost a small fortune. In fact, you can find some great deals on shoes that look much more costly than they are!
Revamp Your Denim Collection
Do you feel stuck in a rut when it comes to the pants in your wardrobe? Find a great pair of white skinny jeans and pair them with a colorful, flowy blouse and a pair of wedges for a day of shopping with girlfriends or date night.
Or, make trying out a new style of dark wash denim one of your resolutions this fall! After all, who says resolutions are just for the New Year?
Wear your Confidence on Your Sleeve
Style is all about finding clothes that make you feel your best self. This may be easier said than done. However, by now you’ve likely figured out that good fashion investments are less about cost per wear and more about joy per wear.
So never stop experimenting with what works best for your unique body type, lifestyle and personality. Embrace this chapter with everything you’ve got… think attitude not age!
Let’s have fun with style and understand that the goal is to look better, not necessarily younger. We’ve lived a full life, so let’s show it off!
What’s your favorite item that you’ve owned for decades? Are you willing to re-examine trends from the past when they resurface or are you a done-and-done type of woman? What’s the one item in your closet that gives you the most joy per wear?
