Fashion After 50
I just love a great wardrobe, my darlings. Being a woman after 50 does not mean you must sacrifice fashion and beauty for comfort. I’m a firm believer that you can look great at any age, no matter what your budget is or where you live.
As well, it is never too late to make fashion a priority. Maybe you don’t know what your style is, or maybe you lost your desire to dress for all occasions at some point during adulthood. However, if you are reading this and you are able, you can become a fashionista in your own right at this very moment.
Now, how do you do that you may be asking? It is not as hard as you may think, my sweet readers. First, we will start with basic wardrobe essentials and move up from there. Let us begin!
Wardrobe Essentials
An essential wardrobe is important to any person. If you have a closet stocked full of basics you are less likely to suffer from I do not have anything to wear syndrome. I’m sure we have all been there. Having a wardrobe built will not only keep your clothing items downsized and manageable, but will also make your daily dressing easier and dare I say more enjoyable.
Blacks Trouser
I adore wonderful black trousers. Not only can they be used for the office, but also to an elegant dinner party or a casual lunch date with friends. This item is a wardrobe staple because it can be used any day of the week. Pair it with a blouse or a white t-shirt and cardigan—you cannot go wrong!
Versatile Jean Selection
A good, dark jean of high-quality can last you many years, my readers. Once you find a brand of jeans that fits, buy a few pairs. As we know, it can be hard to find a perfect fit. I know I always wish I would have gotten one more pair of my favorites when I had the chance. Remember they will last a long time if they are made well, so they are a great investment. My favorite brands are Grlfrnd, J Brand and Rag and Bone.
Many fashion experts say to buy three different types and I must agree. One pair of dark, mid-rise boot-cut jeans that allow you to wear a cute boot, one pair of mid-rise, straight-leg jeans to create classic lines and one pair of high-rise jeans. Having these options in your closet will give you several different looks with which you can pair any top and shoe.
Plain White Tee
I know that it may seem like a plain white tee is a little boring, but it is so very versatile. You can really pair it with anything, darlings! This includes your jean selection, trousers, a nice skirt or a slip dress. A fashionable white tee can be used at many appropriate occasions and they are beyond comfortable.
White Button-Down
Like the plain white tee, a white button-down shirt will add many options to your essential wardrobe. This clothing item can be used for casual, business or elegant wear. You can even wear it under a sweater to create a layered, slimming look. It’s also great for pairing with a statement earring or necklace. You know I love a great accessory!
Ballet Flat
Having a great ballet flat will give your wardrobe a chic and comfortable feel. You can use them to dress up a casual outfit or wear a pair to a cocktail party with a little black dress. Ballet flats come in all different styles and colors, giving your outfit a splash of your personal flair.
A Perfect Pump
We all need a great pump or elegant heel in our closets, darlings. A perfect pump will make your legs look slim in jeans or add extra height to your frame. As a woman after 50, you can buy a square heel that provides more stability, if needed. Buy your pumps in a color that will go with several outfits. For example, a nude heel is great to have in any wardrobe.
Sneaker
I love a great sneaker, my darlings! Especially if it’s fun and shows my personality. A sneaker is not only comfortable, but it’s also easy to take on and off and can be worn around town. Don’t shy away from a good sneaker. The ones I’m wearing in my picture are Miu Miu. You can buy a similar version at Nordstroms HERE.
Sharp Blazer
All wardrobes need a sharp, elegant blazer. If you need something professional, a blazer is always a great go-to. It can also double as a coat in colder weather or as a complement to a cocktail dress or jeans and a plain white tee. Put it with statement earrings and your look will always be fashionable. Also, don’t be afraid to purchase a patterned, striped or linen blazer. These can add a lot of life and color to any look! A great blazer will never go out of style.
Cardigan
An all-year, all-weather accessory, a cardigan can be paired with any tee, tank, blouse or dress. They are equally functional and fashionable. You never know when you might get cold or need to dress an outfit up, my darlings. Cardigans are great for any of these reasons.
“Little” Black Dress
Any closet would not be complete without a little black dress or a dress of your choice. We have all heard about the little black dress because it is such an essential. Of course, it doesn’t have to be little, but should be a comfortable and flattering dress. Go for a sleek sheath dress, or a fit and flare dress to wow any cocktail party. If you’re looking for something easy and always fashionable, a great wrap dress will do fine. Pair your dress with a cardigan, blazer or a statement necklace to spice things up. So many options, so little time!
Have Fun, Be Adventurous
What I always like to say, darlings, is know your personal likes and dislikes and follow your gut. Shopping does not have to be hard and nowadays you can do it from the comfort of your own home. Online shopping at places like Amazon have made it easy to shop and return or exchange items that do not fit. As well, don’t be afraid to mix fun prints with solids or layer when you need to.
Take fashion risks. Try a French tuck on a shirt and read more of my blogs on fashion to give you lots of ideas for your wardrobe! Find your style by trial and error. Be adventurous and show me the looks you create with your new essentials. I would love to see them.
