How to Wear a Belt Bag, My Top Picks for 2024

*Affiliate Disclosure

If a style is not also functional, then it is not a style that works for me, darlings, which is why I think everyone should learn how to wear a belt bag. You’ve likely seen them around, the Lululemon belt bag has gotten very popular as well as higher-end designer versions like my favorites, the Gucci waist bag and this Luis Vuitton belt bag. There’s something for everyone and every budget, believe you me! I’ve been wearing these for years. As a matter of fact, I first wrote this post 5 years ago, and looks like I was onto something because belt bags are more popular now than ever so I thought I’d update my picks for 2024. Enjoy!

This is one of my favorite belt bags by Gucci. Find a similar Gucci belt bag here.

On a day-to-day basis, the accessories and clothing I find myself relying on are the ones that are functional. I like to travel light, and so I have come to rely on a fabulous belt bag where I put my essentials as opposed to always lugging around a handbag. You could say I’m a bag fanatic, I’ve shared tips on how to choose a purse that fits your lifestyle, as well as what to consider when buying luggage and everything in between. Now let’s talk belt bags!

Is there a difference between a belt bag, waist bag, and fanny pack?

I know what you’re thinking, but DON’T call it a fanny pack! My belt bag is sleek and it doesn’t hold nearly as much as a fanny pack would. Again, think “light.” I have often traveled with it and kept my essentials close and out of harm’s way. I walk the dog with it. I run out shopping with it. It is so much handier than a handbag, dear readers (even though I still adore my handbags!).

It also feels safer than a handbag.

I wanted to introduce you to this highly functional accessory and show you how they can be worn fashionably, so that if you do choose to utilize it, you won’t feel as though it is a dated look.

My go-to is a Louis Vuitton Pochette Belt Belt. I love Louis Vuitton because it holds up so beautifully, but these do not seem to be currently in production. I personally bought mine several years ago. I’ve found the same style online from reputable resalers, such as this shop.

There are, however, many ways to get the look that are not Louis Vuitton. Most of my bags and accessories I’ve had for years and years, which to my mind, makes them worth the investment—but that doesn’t mean that I’m out of touch—I know they’re expensive! I love to share my style, which I understand is considered aspirational to some, and some swaps that I love, also!

The Best Way to Style a Belt Bag

Image: Honey Good in her closet surrounded by accessories including her favorite belt bags.

Accessories are hands down my favorite thing to shop for! Belt bags go with just about anything, but I like to make sure they stand out with some flare!

My absolute favorite thing about waist bags is that they can be worn in so many different ways!

  1. Firstly, the most obvious way to wear a belt bag is, of course, around your waist. Cinch it snugly around your hips, resting it just above the small of your back. This not only keeps your hands free but also accentuates your waistline, creating a flattering silhouette. It’s perfect for those leisurely strolls through the market or a day of exploring new places.
  2. Now, darling, don’t limit yourself to just the waist! For a more contemporary twist, try wearing your belt bag slung across your chest. Adjust the strap to your desired length and let the bag rest comfortably against your side. This style works whether you’re running errands or meeting friends for a casual brunch.
  3. Feeling adventurous? Transform your belt bag into a shoulder bag by extending the strap and draping it over your, well, shoulder. This hands-free option allows you to keep your essentials close while leaving your hands free for more important tasks, like shopping or sipping a latte at your favorite café.
  4. For those elegant evening affairs, my dear, fret not! You can wear your belt bag as a clutch by simply removing the strap. Tuck it under your arm and let it become a sophisticated statement piece that adds a touch of glamour to your ensemble.

And there you have it, my dear—the many marvelous ways to wear a belt bag. From practicality to style, this versatile accessory truly has it all. So, go ahead and experiment, let your imagination run wild, and embrace the freedom and fashion that a belt bag brings.

They’re attractive, however,, I won’t wear one as was almost pick pocketed once. I had a front fanny pack and was on a crowded train in Paris…Know Paris is the place for pick picketers but sorry not for me. Be careful

  6. Violet O'Brien-Hil says:

Love your new haircut…..it’s so becoming. I would like to try a cut like yours, but of course, hesitate. Is it easy to maintain?

  7. Deborah Andrews-Gautney says:

I needed a small bag to hold essentials for an event. The dears at Love Street Market on Cedarcrest recommended a HOBO brand bag. It has now become my go to bag for quick trips where I do not need to bring it all. It holds my glasses, lipstick, cell phone, keys and has multiple places for IDs. The rings on the side allow movement,so that I can wear it as a small shoulder bag. Whip stitching and a tassel add a touch of style that keeps it from being mistaken for a pack.

  8. Sandrala says:

    Deborah,
Will look up the HOBO brand bag if I can … Looks ideal for my needs. Good idea by Honey.

  9. Mary says:

Thanks for sharing! I’ve had my Lulu one for several years and love it. My daughter was wearing it and I thought it was such a great idea. I wear it as a crossbody bag and always use it when running errands, shopping and travel. I usually put it in a larger carryon tote.

  10. SoCal Allison says:

Love these! Thank you, Honey, for listing so many in so many different price ranges! I have 2 from Vera Bradley but had to buy them off ebay because they were old stock. But I love them! Very easy to use for anytime when you don’t have to carry a lot with you!

    • Susan Good says:
