When the opportunity presented itself to write an insider’s guide to this dreamy destination, I remember thinking ‘gosh, what timing…’ I’d just recently run away from said beach town. Tulum, Mexico, the place that is absolute paradise for so many, had lost its lustre for me.
My Tulum Story
Hi! I’m Stacey and 4 years ago, I moved to Tulum. I’d just turned 50, and I was looking for something more. My kid no longer needed me, my job I no longer wanted, and I’d just lost my 18-year-old yorkie. (And I’d also said goodbye to a few other things, like my waistline, my will to live, anything perky, and my segggs drive).
The adventures of Tulum along with dog rescue were exactly what I needed, until they weren’t.
Four years were spent galivanting through this jungle escape, being blessed, having access to so much, as my work had me partnering with realtors, photographers, property managers, and the like. The day-to-day of boots-on-the-ground dog rescue kicked my booty though. I’d become an integral part of Help Tulum Dogs. And I was burnt the heck out, or I think the correct term for it is called ‘compassion fatigue.’
Suddenly this beach town felt stale.
Welp, how does that saying go, “you don’t know what ya got till it’s gone?!”
After I ran off and spent 7 months in the mountains of Chiapas, Mexico, suddenly all I could think of was Tulum, my home. I couldn’t wait to get back to the beach, the food, the vibe, the cenotes, the jungle, and the people. I made my way back to Tulum right before writing this article, and I’m excited to share my love of this area with you.
My Favorite Things in Tulum
So, after that brief summary as to why I’m your gal for all things Tulum, let’s dive into a few of my favorite things in one of the most gorgeous places in the world.
Where to Stay in Tulum: The Best Places for Every Budget and Experience
OK, so the number one thing I am asked is, “Where should I stay?!”
And to be honest that’s a tough one, because usually I don’t know your budget, etc. And in Tulum, the budget for lodging varies greatly, from $1200/night for some beachfront stays to $50/night for a cute condo. I do know a perfect visit for me would be to mix it up! Stay for part of your visit on the beach in the hotel zone and the other in town or the jungle.
- Be Tulum is a beachfront property that’s absolute perfection.
- Jungle Luxe is an amazing property management company run by a fellow midlife gal doing her thing here. She has a fabulous variety of stunning properties.
- I also love Delek Tulum on the beach.
For Airbnbs and the best locations, keep in mind that Tulum is very spread out. Accessing the beach is a bit of a trek, and transportation is needed.
- Aldea Zama is the area you want to be in if paved roads are your jam.
- La Veleta is at the edge of town and has more of a jungle vibe (and where I currently reside). To be in the heart of this area and all its cafes and restaurants, I’d recommend staying close to Calle 7.

Tulum Beach Clubs (Without the “ootz-ootz” Music)
For those who prefer beach clubs that play music with actual lyrics instead of just electronic beats, here are some great spots:
- Cinco – Located on the Jaguar Park (aka ruins) side, Cinco is super chill and perfect if you want to enjoy a relaxing beach day without the loud, repetitive beats. Highly recommend for a more laid-back vibe.

- Ziggys – An institution in Tulum, Ziggys is a classic choice for a day at the beach. With good food, drinks, and excellent service, it’s a great spot to spend an afternoon.
- Ultimo Maya – If you want to escape it all, head down to the Sian Kaan and enjoy the peaceful, unspoiled beach at Ultimo Maya. It’s the perfect getaway from the more crowded spots.
